About Ljubljana Central Market
The Central Market of Ljubljana occupies Vodnik and Pogačar squares, between the cathedral and the river. Outdoors you'll find producers’ stalls selling fruit, vegetables, seasonal mushrooms, cheeses, honey, flowers and bread. The market is open every day except Sunday, and it's liveliest early in the morning and on Saturdays.
Along the river, Jože Plečnik designed a long curved building, constructed between 1940 and 1942. On the street side, a covered colonnade houses stalls selling herbs, spices and handicrafts. On the river side, arched windows open onto the water. On the lower level is the fish market, with fish from the Adriatic and trout from the country's rivers.
Plečnik’s plan also included a bridge linking the market to the opposite bank. It was only built much later and named the Butchers’ Bridge (Mesarski most); today it connects the market square to Petkovšek Embankment, near the bars on the north bank.
The market is a good place to try Slovenian products such as Carniolan bee honey, mountain cheese and Karst pršut. Around it, several kiosks and restaurants serve food made with what is sold there.
