About Town Square (Mestni trg) of Škofja Loka

Mestni trg, known to locals as Plac, is the main square of Škofja Loka. It is an elongated, gently sloping square surrounded by burgher houses rebuilt after the 1511 earthquake and decorated in the following centuries. Many have painted façades, stone portals and inner courtyards.

The Homan House (Homanova hiša), at one end of the square, is one of the city’s best-known buildings, with a decorated façade and a linden tree in front. The old town hall is also on the square. Trade from the Sora valleys ran through here, and the craftsmen’s guilds shaped the town’s life for centuries.

A parallel street descends to Spodnji trg, the lower square, where the old bishops’ barn is located. At the southern end of the centre, the 15th-century Church of Saint James is the parish church.

When the Passion of Škofja Loka returns to the streets, the procession passes through these squares with hundreds of participants in costume.
