About Church of the Annunciation, Crngrob
The Church of the Annunciation stands in the small village of Crngrob, about 4 km north of Škofja Loka, on the plain at the foot of the hills. Its origins date to the 13th century, and the building grew and gained decoration throughout the Middle Ages. It is one of Slovenia’s most valuable medieval churches and a pilgrimage site.
The best-known feature is the Saint Dominic (Sveta nedelja) fresco on the exterior wall, protected by a 19th-century porch. It was painted between 1446 and 1460 by the workshop of Janez of Ljubljana. The fresco uses images to teach what a Christian should do on Sunday, such as pray, attend Mass and care for the sick, and what not to do, such as gamble, drink or fight.
Inside are other Gothic frescoes and a large Baroque altar. The church is often closed, and visits to the interior must be arranged in advance. Even without entering, the porch fresco can be seen, though some details are hard to distinguish; the Loka Museum has a replica.
The route from Škofja Loka to Crngrob is flat and waymarked, and many people go on foot or by bicycle.
