About Tunnels under the Old Town of Kranj
Under Kranj’s old town runs a network of about 1,300 meters of tunnels, excavated in the promontory’s conglomerate rock during World War II. They were built to protect the town’s population from bombings because Kranj had important industries. The tunnels have entrances at several points, including the Kokra canyon and the slope below Pungert, the city’s oldest quarter.
Opening the tunnels to the public earned the town a tourism award for creativity. Guided tours tell the story of the shelters and the town during the war, and some sections have exhibitions, such as a digital presentation and an information center about the olm, the blind cave amphibian of Slovenia.
Inside the tunnels the temperature stays between 10 and 12 °C year-round. At certain times they host themed events, and on those days regular visits may be canceled.
Guided tours run on fixed days of the week, meeting at the tourist information house on the main square. There are also visits by appointment for groups.
