About Church of St. Cantianus

The parish Church of Saint Cantianus and Companions (Cerkev sv. Kancijana in tovarišev) dominates the main square of Kranj’s old town. It is the city’s largest church and dates from the 14th century. The interior, with three naves of similar height, is an example of late-Gothic hall churches in the region, featuring ribbed vaults and frescoes.

The tower is open to visitors by appointment through the tourist information center. The viewpoint stands 40 meters high and shows the roofs of the promontory, the Kokra and Sava rivers and, on clear days, the Julian Alps and the Kamnik–Savinja Alps.

Next to the church is the ossuary, in an area where excavations uncovered very old graves. Part of the finds from the old town are exhibited at the Gorenjska Museum, in Khislstein Castle.

The square in front is the old town’s meeting point, with the town hall and bourgeois houses. From there you can reach Prešeren’s house and the tunnels’ entrance.
