About Kokra Canyon

The Kokra River flows down from the Kamnik–Savinja Alps and, when it reaches Kranj, runs through a narrow canyon cut into conglomerate rock before joining the Sava. The canyon follows the eastern edge of the promontory where the old town sits, and its walls reach several dozen meters in height. It’s rare to see a landscape like this so close to a city center.

A roughly 2 km circular trail descends to the canyon floor and runs along the riverbanks, with stairs, walkways and sections on the rock itself, passing under the houses and the promontory’s walls. The loop takes about an hour at a relaxed pace.

Trail entrances are in front of the city library, descending along the bank called Kokrški breg, and on the other side of the old town, on Poštna Street, via stairs. Above the cliff there is a viewpoint over the river and the Sava valley.

Further north, in the Kosorep suburb, the river forms another narrow, well-known stretch reachable by trails.
