Approximate distances. Check flights and bus, train or boat schedules before you travel.
Trains from Ljubljana reach Kamnik on weekdays in under 45 minutes; the Kamnik mesto stop is the closest to the old centre. Buses connect the town with the capital every day. Ljubljana Airport is about 15 km away. For Velika Planina, drive through the Kamniška Bistrica valley to the cable car.
How many days
Half a day is enough for the old centre, Mali grad and Zaprice Castle. Velika Planina requires another half day, or a full day to hike on the plateau. Two days let you see everything without rush.
When to go
From late spring to early autumn walks and the plateau are more pleasant, and the Mali grad chapel usually opens in summer. September has fewer visitors. In winter the town is quiet and Velika Planina welcomes skiers.
The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.
Do you need a car?
For the town, no: the centre is small and reachable by train or bus from Ljubljana. For Velika Planina, a car makes things easier because the cable car is in the valley, about 10 km away, and there are few buses to it.
