About Vipava Springs

The Vipava River rises within the town that bears its name, at the foot of the Nanos plateau. Water that infiltrates the limestone of the plateau and the Postojna basin returns to the surface when it meets impermeable rock and springs forth in seven groups of permanent sources, spread between the main square and the castle hill. The water channels join soon after, in a delta-like pattern, rare for a spring.

The main springs, Podfarovž and Podskala, are a few steps from Glavni trg, behind the Lanthieri Palace, a Baroque building that dominates the square. Others emerge near the old Tabor tower, in Podlipca, in Jama and in Sleženec. Small stone bridges cross the water channels and link the streets of the old center.

Part of the springs supplies water to the region. From the center, a short path climbs to the hill of the old castle, of which ruins remain, offering views over the town, the springs and the upper Vipava Valley.
