About Gonjače Tower
Gonjače Tower stands on top of the Mejnik hill at 321 metres, on the southwest side of the village of Gonjače, northeast of Šmartno. It is a tower of about 23 metres, with a staircase of more than 140 steps up to the platform, and was built after World War II beside a memorial dedicated to Brda residents who died in the conflict.
From the platform the view is all around: the vineyard- and orchard-covered hills of Brda, the villages on the hilltops, the Friulian plain and the Soča valley. At night the tower is often illuminated and can be seen from many parts of the region.
The site is a waypoint on trails linking Šmartno, Gonjače and Dobrovo across the hills, and gives a good sense of Brda’s geography before you explore the villages.

By car, about 3 km from Šmartno, with parking beside the memorial. On foot, a circular trail links Šmartno to the tower in about an hour.
Tip
Climb it before visiting the other villages: from the top it’s easy to locate Šmartno, Dobrovo and the roads between the hills.
