About Dobrovo Castle
Dobrovo Castle was built around 1600 on the site of an older fortification and is one of the main Renaissance buildings in the Gorizia region. It has an almost square plan with a tower at each corner and stands on the top of the village that is the seat of the municipality of Brda. It belonged to several noble families; the last owner was Count Baguer, whose collection of paintings is partly displayed in the castle.
After decades of restoration, the castle reopened as a cultural center and museum. The main attraction is the gallery dedicated to Zoran Mušič, a painter and printmaker born in Bukovica near Gorizia who lived and worked in Venice and Paris; the collection brings together his prints and drawings. Other rooms present historical maps and life on the border in Brda.
The castle hosts temporary exhibitions and events, and on the ground floor there is a cellar with wines from the region. Around it, the village is small, and the roads that lead out of it go to the vineyard-covered hills and the other villages of Brda.
