About Štanjel Castle
Štanjel Castle occupies the village’s highest point, within the walls raised in the 15th century to protect residents from Ottoman raids. Of medieval origin, it was rebuilt by the Counts of Cobenzl at the end of the 17th century, with a closed courtyard and wings around it. It was heavily damaged in both world wars and later restored.
The rooms contain a permanent gallery with works by Lojze Spacal, a painter and printmaker born in Trieste, whose Karst landscapes are among the best-known works of 20th-century Slovenian art. An exhibition presents the life and work of Max Fabiani, an architect born in the neighboring village of Kobdilj who worked in Vienna, Ljubljana and Trieste and served as Štanjel’s mayor between the wars.
From the castle, the stone streets descend among restored houses down to the 15th-century Church of St. Daniel, whose lemon-shaped dome was added in 1609. From the top of the walls the view opens onto the Branica valley and the Karst hills as far as the Vipava valley.
