About Sežana Botanical Garden

Sežana’s botanical garden is located in the town centre, next to the Mirasasso villa, a summer residence built in 1848 by the Scaramangà family, Greek merchants established in Trieste. The Scaramangà family designed the garden in the style of the bourgeois Italian gardens of the time and enriched it with plants brought on the family’s ships.

The section beside the villa is formal, with geometric flowerbeds, paths and a fountain; further on, the garden becomes freer, with large trees including cedars and other exotic species. The garden’s best-known feature is the greenhouse from 1890, built as a smaller version of the greenhouse at Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna.

The garden remained with the family until nationalisation after World War II, and has belonged to the Municipality of Sežana since 1957. The villa today houses the municipal administration. Adjacent to the garden is an interpretation centre for Karst vegetation, which showcases the plateau’s native plants.
