About Mount Triglav

At 2,864 meters, Triglav dominates the Julian Alps and the center of Triglav National Park. The three-peaked silhouette appears on the country’s coat of arms and flag, and climbing it at least once is a tradition for many Slovenians. On the summit stands the small metal tower Aljažev stolp, from the late 19th century, used as a shelter and landmark.

From Bohinj, the best-known route climbs via the Savica waterfall and the Valley of the Triglav Lakes (Dolina Triglavskih jezer), with mountain lakes and mountain huts, and reaches the summit from the south. Another option starts from the Pokljuka plateau. On any route, the ascent generally takes two days, with an overnight in a mountain hut, and the final section includes exposed passages with steel cables and anchors.

The climbing season usually runs from July to September, when the high trails are free of snow and the huts are open. Outside that period, the mountain is only for those with winter experience. If you lack experience on equipped routes, climb with a licensed mountain guide, wearing a helmet and safety equipment.

If you don’t plan to reach the summit, Triglav can be seen from the Vogel cable car, from the trails above the lake, and from the Valley of the Triglav Lakes, reachable on long day hikes from Savica.
