About Savica Waterfall

Savica springs from a karst source in the rock face of Mount Komarča, fed by water from the lakes in the Triglav valley higher up. The water runs through underground galleries and emerges from the rock already as a waterfall, 78 meters high. Part of the flow separates inside the mountain and reappears further down as a second jet of about 25 meters. Together, the two form an A-shaped figure over a green pool.

Savica is the main source of the Sava Bohinjka, which passes through the lake and then joins the Sava Dolinka to form the Sava, the country’s largest river. The poet France Prešeren made it famous in the poem Krst pri Savici (The Baptism on the Savica).

Access begins at the parking lot by the Savica hut, at the end of the road that passes through Ukanc. From there, a path with more than 500 steps climbs through the forest, passes a viewpoint overlooking the lake and ends at a wooden pavilion facing the fall, in 20 to 25 minutes.

Entrance is paid, and opening hours change with the season. Water volume varies: it is usually higher in spring with the thaw and after rain.
