About Tomaž Godec Museum
The Tomaž Godec Museum occupies the former Godec family tannery on the banks of the Bistrica stream in the center of Bohinjska Bistrica. It is part of the Gorenjska Museum network and is named after Tomaž Godec, from the tanner family who once lived in the house.
The exhibition shows how leather was tanned, with tools and the vats from the old workshop, and tells the story of the Iron Route: for centuries the Bohinj valley had ore mines and forges, such as those in Stara Fužina, linked to the Zois family.
Another section of the museum covers the First World War. Bohinj lay behind the Isonzo front, and the Bohinj railway carried soldiers and supplies to the battles in the Soča valley on the other side of the mountains. Photographs, objects and maps show life in the valley during those years.
The museum is small and has limited opening hours outside the summer season.
