About Giant's Castle
Ajdovski gradec is a wooded hill near Bohinjska Bistrica where remains of an ancient fortified settlement were found, including stretches of stone wall and the base of a gate. The name, common in Slovenia, means something like ‘castle of the giants’ or ‘castle of the pagans’, as local tradition called old ruins.
Excavations at the site and nearby places, such as Selo and Telečnica, found objects from the Iron Age and the Roman period, evidence that the Bohinj valley has been inhabited and exploited for its iron ore since early times. Panels along the path explain the finds.
The ascent is short, along a forest trail, and from the top you can see the village, the Sava Bohinjka valley and the surrounding mountains. The site is peaceful and little visited.
The site is part of the valley’s themed trails and can be combined with a walk or bike ride between Bohinjska Bistrica and the lake.
