About Museum of Apiculture (Radovljica Manor)

The beekeeping museum (Čebelarski muzej) was founded in 1959 and is located in Radovljica’s Baroque manor on Linhart Square as part of the municipal museum. It is dedicated to a long-standing activity in Slovenia, where beekeeping is common in both rural and urban areas.

The best-known items in the collection are the painted hive front panels (panjske končnice), wooden boards decorated with religious scenes, legends and satirical depictions of daily life, mostly from the 18th and 19th centuries. They were placed on the front of stacked wooden hives in apiaries, and the museum houses hundreds of them.

The exhibition also presents the Carniolan bee (Apis mellifera carnica), the native breed now kept in several countries, traditional box-shaped hives and beekeepers’ tools. A room is dedicated to Anton Janša, an 18th-century beekeeper born in the region and a teacher at the first beekeeping school in Vienna, with copies of his books.

In season, an observation hive lets you see the bees working behind glass.
