About Historic Center of Cabaceiras
Cabaceiras’s historic center is small and can be explored on foot in a short time. The single-story houses, with colorful façades and parapets, line streets that lead to the bandstand square and the Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Conceição. The church originated from an 18th-century chapel, around which the settlement that became the town formed.
Much of O Auto da Compadecida, released in 2000, was filmed on these streets. The church façade was painted blue for the filming and remained so at the residents’ request. Dozens of other productions have passed through the town and its rural area, earning it the nickname Roliúde Nordestina, written on a sign at the town entrance.
The Cinematographic Memorial, opened in 2007, gathers photographs, posters, costumes and objects from productions filmed in the municipality. Near the square there is also the Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário and the old public jail, which appears in scenes from the film. Residents who worked as extras often tell stories about the shoots.
In early June, the center hosts the Festa do Bode Rei, with concerts, goat exhibitions, a leather crafts fair and goat dishes, such as the bodeoca — tapioca filled with goat meat served at the town’s restaurants.
