About Petite maison blanche
In July 1996, heavy rains made the Chicoutimi River overflow violently, sweeping away houses and streets in the city center. A small white wooden house, built at the end of the 19th century on top of a rock, stayed standing while the water rushed around it. Images of the house surrounded by the current spread across the country.
The house was preserved in the same spot and became a symbol of the residents’ resilience. Inside, an exhibit tells the story of the flood, the following days and the reconstruction, with photographs, videos and testimonies.
A riverside park with the waterfall and walkways was created around it. The house is open during the summer season and is managed by La Pulperie; check the dates and the current fee schedule.
