About Fort Museum of the North West Mounted Police
In 1874 the newly formed North-West Mounted Police arrived in southwestern Alberta to stop the illegal whiskey trade and establish the Canadian government’s presence. They built a fort on an island in the Oldman River, later moved to the site of the present town. Fort Macleod grew up around it.
The Fort Museum reconstructs the fort with log palisades and wooden buildings. Exhibits tell the story of the police, which later became the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and of the Blackfoot peoples and regional pioneers, with objects, uniforms, weapons, and photographs.
In summer, young people dressed in the 1878 red uniforms perform a mounted drill, with manoeuvres to music, in the fort’s parade ground.
