at your own pace.

Stratford is a town in southwestern Ontario, about 150 km from Toronto, surrounded by farmland. Like its English namesake, it is crossed by an Avon River, and that coincidence is what inspired its theatre festival.

The Stratford Festival began in 1953 in a large riverside tent with a production of Richard III. It grew to become the largest repertory classical theatre festival in North America, with four theatres and a season from April to October that mixes Shakespeare, classic and contemporary plays, and musicals.

The centre has Victorian brick buildings, a town hall with a tower, and shops, cafés and restaurants that cater to theatre audiences. The Avon River forms a lake with parks and gardens along its banks, and white swans swim there from early spring until late fall.

Many visitors come from Toronto to see two or three shows over a weekend.
