Get to know the place
Regina, the capital of Saskatchewan, sits amid the southern plains of the province, in a flat landscape of wheat and canola fields that reaches the horizon. The city was founded in 1882 with the arrival of the railway and became the seat of government for the Northwest Territories and later the province.
Regina is linked to the history of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police: the training academy has operated in the city since the late 19th century, and the heritage centre next door tells the force’s story with exhibits and, on some days, cadet parades.
Downtown is the Wascana Centre, one of the largest urban parks in North America, surrounding an artificial lake. Along the lakeshore are the Legislative Building with its high dome, the Royal Saskatchewan Museum with dinosaurs and the natural history of the prairies, and the university art gallery.
The city is the base for travel through the southern prairies, such as Grasslands National Park.
