About Lake on the Mountain Provincial Park
The Lake on the Mountain sits atop a hill on the east shore of Prince Edward County, near the village of Glenora. The lake’s water is about 60 meters above Lake Ontario, which lies just below across the road.
The lake’s origin puzzled locals and scientists for a long time because there is no visible river feeding it. The Mohawks told stories about it, and early settlers believed it had no bottom. Today the most accepted explanation is that it is fed by underground springs, and geologists debate whether the basin formed by rock dissolution or other processes.
The provincial park is small, with a lawn, picnic tables and a viewpoint over Adolphus Bay and Glenora’s harbour, where the ferry to Adolphustown runs.
