About Grenfell Historic Properties

Wilfred Grenfell, an English physician, arrived on the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador in 1892 with a relief mission for fishermen. He established hospitals, infirmaries, schools, orphanages and cooperatives in a region without roads or doctors, and made St. Anthony the headquarters of his work.

The Grenfell Historic Properties include the house where he lived with his family, built in 1910 and furnished as it was at the time, and an interpretation centre with photographs and objects about the mission and life in the coastal communities. The mission also started a handicraft production, with coats and hooked rugs, still sold in the complex's shop.

The complex is in downtown St. Anthony, near the hospital that continues Grenfell’s work. It is open only in summer, with dates and fees to be confirmed.
