About Norstead Viking Village and Port of Trade

Norstead is a few kilometres from the L'Anse aux Meadows site, on the shore of a bay. It is an open-air museum, run by a nonprofit organization, that recreates a Viking trading port from the era of voyages to North America.

The site includes a communal turf house, a church, a blacksmith's workshop, a boat shed and other buildings, where interpreters dressed as Norse people spin wool, weave, work iron and tell saga stories. In the boat shed is the Snorri, a replica of a knarr, a Viking cargo ship, which in the late 1990s retraced the voyage from Greenland to Newfoundland.

Norstead complements the historic site: while the archaeological site displays the remains, Norstead shows how a settlement would function. It is open in the summer season; check the current dates and schedule.
