About Sirmilik National Park
Sirmilik National Park was established in 2001 and protects Bylot Island and parts of northern Baffin Island. The name, in Inuktitut, means place of glaciers. Ice-covered mountains rise in front of Pond Inlet, and dozens of glaciers descend to the sea.
Bylot Island is a bird sanctuary, with cliffs where hundreds of thousands of thick-billed murres and kittiwakes nest, and plains where tens of thousands of snow geese raise their young in summer. Seals, narwhals, and Greenland whales swim in the surrounding waters, and polar bears roam the coast.
The park has no trails or facilities. Visits are made with Inuit guides from Pond Inlet, by boat in summer or by snowmobile and sled in spring, over the frozen sea.
