About Peggy's Cove
Peggy's Cove is a small fishing village on the eastern tip of St. Margarets Bay, about 45 km from Halifax. The wooden houses, fishing sheds and boats sit in a narrow cove, surrounded by granite rocks rounded by ice from the last glaciation.
At the tip of the promontory stands the Peggy's Point lighthouse, from 1915, white with a red lantern, perched on bare rock. An observation platform with ramps and walkways leads close to it. The village has a small church, art galleries and the memorial to Swissair Flight 111, which crashed into the sea near the coast in 1998.
Atlantic waves strike the lower rocks forcefully, which become dark and slippery. Signs warn visitors to stay on the dry, light-coloured rock, away from the water. People still live in the village: respect private houses and wharves.
