About Halifax Public Gardens

The Halifax Public Gardens opened to the public in 1867 and are one of the best-preserved Victorian gardens in North America. They occupy an entire city block between Spring Garden Road and South Park Street, enclosed by iron railings and gates.

Gravel paths wind through flower beds laid out as in the 19th century, century-old trees, ponds with ducks, stone bridges, fountains and statues. At the centre stands the painted bandstand, dating from 1887, where concerts are held on summer Sundays. A miniature replica of the Titanic floats in one of the ponds.

The garden is maintained by the city and closes in winter. Around it is the Spring Garden Road neighbourhood, with shops, cafés and the central library, in contemporary architecture.
