About Western Brook Pond
Western Brook Pond is a fjord carved by glaciers in the Long Range Mountains that lost its connection to the sea when the land rebounded after deglaciation. Today it is a freshwater lake of about 16 km, between rock cliffs exceeding 600 meters, with waterfalls falling from the plateau.
To reach the dock, a flat trail of about 3 km crosses bogs and small forests with boardwalks. The dock is the departure point for an authorized park operator’s boat tour, which enters the fjord’s narrow channel and proceeds to the far end, where some hikers disembark for multi‑day crossings.
The boat runs from mid‑May through the end of September, weather permitting, and is very busy in summer: book in advance. The trail to the dock is open year‑round. The park charges an entry fee, and the boat is paid separately; check the current rates.
