About Gros Morne Mountain

Mount Gros Morne, at 806 meters, is the second highest point on Newfoundland island and gives the national park its name. The French name roughly means large isolated hill.

The trail to the summit is about 16 km round trip and is the park’s most demanding day hike. It starts through forest and bogs, climbs a steep chute of loose rock, and reaches the summit plateau, with low tundra vegetation. From the top you can see the Ten Mile Pond fjord, Bonne Bay, and the Long Range mountains. Caribou and ptarmigan inhabit the plateau.

The trail typically closes in spring until late June to protect vegetation during the thaw. Weather at the summit changes quickly, with wind, fog, and cold even in summer. Check conditions with Parks Canada before you go.
