About Anticosti Interpretation Centre

The Anticosti Interpretation Centre for History, Culture and Paleontology operates in Port-Menier’s church, the island’s only village. It began as an ecomuseum in 1985 and tells Anticosti’s human and natural story in a few rooms.

Part of the collection recalls the era of Henri Menier, the French chocolatier who bought the island in 1895 to make it a hunting and fishing reserve: furniture, objects and photographs from the large house he built on Ellis Bay, burned in 1953. Another display shows the trades and everyday life of former residents.

The paleontology room presents the marine fossils from the island’s rocks, which record one of the great extinctions in the history of life on Earth and led to Anticosti’s inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2023. It is a good first stop before heading to the national park.
