About Baie-Sainte-Claire

Baie-Sainte-Claire, formerly called English Bay, was Anticosti’s first permanent village. When he arrived on the island in 1895, Henri Menier named the place after his mother and made it the administrative center, with houses painted in the colors of his chocolate packaging.

Because boats had difficulty docking in the bay, a few years later the administrative center moved to Ellis Bay, where Port-Menier was established, and the old village was eventually abandoned. Today what remains is a restored lime kiln, the customs agent’s house and two cemeteries, one Catholic and one Protestant.

The site is an open field by the gulf, and the white-tailed deer that Menier released on the island often graze there, especially at the end of the day. Nearby is the island’s western point, with an old lighthouse.
