About Skyline Trail
The Skyline Trail is the best-known hike in Cape Breton Highlands National Park. It leaves from the Cabot Trail at the top of French Mountain and follows almost flat terrain through boreal forest to the edge of the cliffs over the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
At the end, a wooden boardwalk with stairs descends along the ridge to a viewpoint, with the winding road far below and the sea ahead. The route is about 6.5 km round trip, with a longer loop alternative. Moose are commonly seen along the way and pilot whales and other whales often appear in the summer.
The trail is very busy in summer and at sunset, when many people go to watch the sun go down. The park charges an entry fee; check the current rate. Follow Parks Canada guidance on wildlife and do not leave the boardwalk on the ridge.
