About St. Peter's Church, Chéticamp

The church of Saint-Pierre is Chéticamp’s landmark: the tall tower, covered in silver-colored metal, is visible from a distance to those arriving by the Cabot Trail or by sea. It was built by the Acadian community in the late 19th century with stones brought from the island in front of the harbor, and consecrated in 1893.

The interior contrasts with the plain exterior: altars, columns and the ceiling are decorated in a baroque style, with paintings, gilding and stained glass. The church remains in use by the parish, and Masses are celebrated in French.

The building sits on the main road facing the harbor and Chéticamp Island. Visits are welcome outside Mass times, and silence is requested.
