About Burbant Tower
The Tour Burbant is the oldest building in Ath. Construction began in 1166, by order of Count Baldwin IV of Hainaut, called the Builder, who fortified several points of the county.
The stone keep still stands about 20 m high with thick walls. It was part of the castle that defended the crossing of the Dendre River.
The surroundings, with the courtyard and more recent buildings, are near the Grand-Place and the 17th-century town hall. The interior can be seen on guided visits, organized by the tourist office on some days of the year.
Even without going in, it is worth passing by the tower during the walk through the center, between the Maison des Géants and the Espace gallo-romain.
