About Gallo-Roman Space
The Espace gallo-romain occupies the former Académie de dessin, on rue de Nazareth in central Ath. It is the city’s archaeology museum and holds objects found in regional excavations.
The route shows everyday life in the Gallo-Roman period and the work of artisans: blacksmiths, potters, carpenters and boatmen. The best-known pieces are Gallo-Roman wooden boats dug up in Pommerœul, in western Hainaut, which help explain the transport of stone and goods via the rivers.
In addition to the permanent exhibition, the museum organises workshops and visits for groups and families. Archaeological items from the former local history museum were also gathered there.
The visit pairs well with the Maison des Géants and the Tour Burbant, all a few minutes’ walk from each other.
