About Hautes Fagnes (High Fens)
The Hautes Fagnes are a plateau between Malmedy, Eupen and the German border, covered by peat bogs, heaths and woods. It is one of Belgium’s largest nature reserves and is part of the Hautes Fagnes-Eifel Natural Park.
The climate is colder and wetter than in the nearby towns, and the landscape changes with the seasons: heather and golden grasses at the end of summer and in autumn, snow in parts of winter. Wooden boardwalks allow you to cross sections of the peatlands without damaging the vegetation.
At the Signal de Botrange, at about 694 m, is Belgium’s highest point, marked by a tower. Nearby, the Botrange Nature Centre provides information about trails and restricted-access zones, which can close during periods of fire risk or bird breeding.
From Malmedy, the Hautes Fagnes are about 12 km away and make a natural complement to a visit to the town.
