Approximate distances. Check flights and bus, train or boat schedules before you travel.

Piteå has no passenger trains. The nearest airport is Luleå, about 50 km away, and regional buses link the two towns frequently. By car, Piteå lies on the E4, which follows the coast to Luleå and, to the south, to Skellefteå and Umeå.

How many days

One day covers the centre, the wooden church, the museum and the Öjebyn church village. With two days, you’ll have time for the coastline south of town and to combine Piteå with Luleå.

When to go

In summer the sun hardly sets and the beaches on the coast south of town get busy. In winter the days are very short and there is snow and ice, with a chance of aurora borealis on clear nights. Some guided visits run only in summer; check before you go.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

Do you need a car?

Not for the centre, which is best explored on foot, nor for Öjebyn, about 7 km away and served by bus. A car helps for visiting the coast and for combining the trip with Luleå and the inland areas.
