The city

What to expect from Piteå.

Town at the mouth of the Pite River, on the Gulf of Bothnia, about 55 km south of Luleå. Piteå received town privileges in 1621 and, after a fire, moved to its current site; the wooden church of 1686 was the only building to escape when Russian troops burned the town in 1721. The old town hall houses the local museum, and in Öjebyn you find one of the large church villages of northern Sweden. It is also the town that gives its name to the pitepalt.
