Abisko

Abisko is a small village on the shore of lake Torneträsk, about 95 km from Kiruna, facing the mountains on the border with Norway. It has Abisko National Park, with the Abiskojåkka canyon, the start of the Kungsleden trail and the Lapporten valley view. Because it often has clear skies, it is much sought after for aurora viewing from September to March at the Aurora Sky Station.

Borgholm

Borgholm is Öland’s main town, the island across the bridge from Kalmar. Small, with wooden houses and a harbour, it sits next to the ruin of a Baroque castle and Solliden, the royal family’s summer residence, with gardens open in season. It’s the base for exploring the island: the windmills, the Stora Alvaret and the Eketorp fortress in the south.

Estocolmo is Sweden’s capital and largest city, spread over fourteen islands between lake Mälaren and the Baltic. The center includes the old town Gamla Stan, the Palácio Real and the Nobel City Hall; the island of Djurgården houses the Vasa Museum, Skansen and the Nordic Museum; Södermalm has viewpoints and Fotografiska. Commuter boats go to the Palácio de Drottningholm and the archipelago, and the metro is an underground art gallery.

Malmö

Malmö is the third largest city in Sweden, in the far south, connected to Copenhagen by the Øresund Bridge. The centre has the squares Stortorget and Lilla torg, the Renaissance castle Malmöhus and the Moderna Museet; to the west the Turning Torso tower marks the Västra Hamnen district, and Ribersborg beach has the 1898 bathhouse over the sea. Copenhagen Airport is about 20 minutes away by train.

Falun

Falun is the capital of Dalarna and grew up around the copper mine that operated for about a thousand years and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The large pit Stora Stöten, the galleries at 67 meters and the origin of the red paint used on Swedish houses are the focus of visits. Dalarnas museum shows the province's culture, and Carl Larsson's house is 13 km away in Sundborn.

Visby

Visby is the capital of Gotland, the largest island in Sweden, and a medieval Hanseatic town surrounded by a 3.4 km wall, almost complete. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it has ruins of Gothic churches, the cathedral of Santa Maria, stone houses and alleys covered in roses in summer. The Gotlands Museum houses the painted stones and Viking silver. Lummelunda cave and the raukar of Fårö lie to the north.

Kalmar

Kalmar is a city on Sweden’s southeast coast, facing the Kalmarsund sound and the island of Öland. It has a Renaissance castle surrounded by water, where the Union of Kalmar was signed in 1397, a 17th-century centre on the island of Kvarnholmen with Tessin’s baroque cathedral, and a museum with finds from the ship Kronan. A 6 km bridge leads to Öland.

Uppsala

Uppsala is the oldest university city in the Nordic countries, 40 minutes by train from Stockholm and 20 minutes from Arlanda. It has the Gothic cathedral where Gustavo Vasa and Lineu are buried, the Gustavianum with its 17th‑century anatomical theatre, the pink castle on the hill, the Jardim de Lineu and, 5 km away, the royal tombs of Gamla Uppsala.

Kiruna

Kiruna is the northernmost town in Sweden, above the Arctic Circle, founded in 1900 around the Kiirunavaara iron mine. The mine is advancing beneath the town, which is being gradually moved to a new center. It is the gateway to Lapland: 17 km away are the Icehotel and the village of Jukkasjärvi, with Sami culture, and 95 km away is Abisko. The northern lights are usually visible from September to March.

Lund

Lund is one of Sweden’s oldest cities, founded around 990, a 10‑minute train ride from Malmö. It revolves around the universidade from 1666, with about 40,000 students. It has the Romanesque cathedral with a 15th‑century astronomical clock and the crypt of the giant Finn, the park Lundagård, the open‑air museum Kulturen and the Jardim Botânico, all within a few minutes’ walk of each other.

Dalarna · Dalarna

Mora

Mora sits on the northwest tip of Lake Siljan, in Dalarna. It’s the hometown of painter Anders Zorn, with a museum and the house where he lived, and the finish of the Vasaloppet, the 90 km ski race on the first Sunday in March. Ten kilometers away, in Nusnäs, family workshops hand-make the Dala horses, and the road around the lake leads to Rättvik, Tällberg and the Vidablick viewpoint.

Gotemburgo is Sweden's second largest city and the main port of Scandinavia on the west coast. The 17th‑century canals, trams and the wooden Haga district characterise the centre. It has Liseberg park, Universeum, the Art Museum at Götaplatsen, the Feskekôrka fish market and Slottsskogen park, and the car‑free southern archipelago is half an hour away by tram and boat.
