The city
Kalmar is a city on Sweden’s southeast coast, facing the Kalmarsund sound and the island of Öland. It has a Renaissance castle surrounded by water, where the Union of Kalmar was signed in 1397, a 17th-century centre on the island of Kvarnholmen with Tessin’s baroque cathedral, and a museum with finds from the ship Kronan. A 6 km bridge leads to Öland.

The local experience
Renaissance castle surrounded by water and ramparts on the shore of the Kalmarsund, where the Union of Kalmar was signed in 1397 and which the Vasa kings turned into a palace in the 16th century.
Kalmar’s baroque cathedral, designed by Nicodemus Tessin the Elder, in the centre of the island of Kvarnholmen, the planned 17th-century town with a grid of streets and stone and wooden houses.
The regional museum of Kalmar, in an old steam mill at the harbor, with the finds from the warship Kronan, which sank off Öland in 1676: cannons, gold coins, instruments and crew personal items.
