Approximate road distances. Check flights and bus schedules before you travel.
Check before buying. Kalmar Airport, 5 km from the centre, has flights from Stockholm of about 1 hour. By train, Copenhagen is about 4 hours and Stockholm about 4h30–5 hours, usually with a change at Alvesta. The station is in the centre.
How many days
One day for the castle, the cathedral, Kvarnholmen and the Kronan museum. With Öland, allow two or three days.
When to go
From May to September the days are usually long and mild, and the castle is open every day. In July and August you can swim at the city beaches. In winter, the castle and the museum remain open with reduced hours, and it gets dark early.
The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.
Do you need a car?
For Kalmar, no: the city is best explored on foot. For Öland, a car is very helpful because the island has few buses. There are car rentals in the city and at the airport.
