Approximate distances. Check flights and bus, train or boat schedules before you travel.
The closest international airport is Faro (FAO), about 20 km away, and the journey to Loulé is by taxi, car, or regional bus. Loulé’s train station, on the Algarve line, is outside the town, several kilometers from the center. By car, Loulé is near the A22 motorway, which crosses the Algarve east–west, and at a short distance from Faro.
How many days
Half a day to a day covers the market, the historic center, the Igreja Matriz and the castle, with a climb to the sanctuary at late afternoon. Many people visit Loulé on a trip from Faro, Albufeira or the coastal beaches; two days allow combining the town with Faro and the Ria Formosa.
When to go
The climate is Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers—afternoons frequently above 30 °C—and mild winters, with rain concentrated between October and March. Spring and autumn are comfortable for walking in the center. At Carnival and during the weeks around Easter, when the festival of the Mãe Soberana takes place, the town receives many visitors.
The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.
Do you need a car?
For the town itself, no: the market, the church, the castle and the historic center are close to one another. A car helps to climb to the sanctuary, about 2 km from the center, to reach the train station, which is set back, and to combine Loulé with Faro and the Algarve beaches.
