The city

What to expect from Loulé.

Loulé is inland in the Algarve, about 15 km northwest of Faro. It grew around a castle of Islamic origin, conquered by the Portuguese in 1249, and in the center it preserves the 13th-century Igreja Matriz de São Clemente and the domed Municipal Market in a neo-Arab style, opened in 1908. On a hill to the west stands the sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Piedade, the Mãe Soberana. The town is known in Portugal for the Carnaval de Loulé and for the festival of the Mãe Soberana.
