The city
Motueka sits at the mouth of the Motueka River, on the western shore of Tasman Bay, between Nelson and Abel Tasman National Park. Founded in 1842, it grew with hops, apples and kiwifruit, and was the country’s main tobacco centre. The rusting hull of the Janie Seddon lies on the waterfront, there is a sandspit frequented by shorebirds, a museum in a 1913 school building and the cycleway that leads to Kaiteriteri.

Short trail in Kahurangi National Park to the cave and the clear-water pool where the north arm of the Riuwaka River emerges from inside Mount Tākaka, among moss-covered marble rocks. A sacred place for local Māori.
A circular cycleway around the Nelson and Tasman region, about 200 km long and classified as a Great Ride. In Motueka it starts on the waterfront and follows via Riwaka to Kaiteriteri Beach on an easy section.
