About István Türr Museum (Türr István Múzeum)
Baja Museum was founded in 1937 and is named after Türr István (1825–1908), born in the town, a general alongside Garibaldi and an engineer associated with the construction of the Corinth Canal. One room displays his personal belongings and documents.
The folk fishing collection, assembled over decades of research by ethnographer Ede Solymos, is known inside and outside Hungary. Nets, boats, traps and tools show how fishing was done on the Danube and its dead arms, and the Life on the Danube exhibition tells the everyday story of fishermen’s and boatmen’s families.
Another exhibition traces Baja’s history from 1696, when it gained town status, to the end of the 20th century. The ethnography section presents the clothing, furniture and objects of the Hungarians, Germans and Bunjevci of the region, communities that formed the town after the end of Ottoman rule.
The museum manages other sites in Baja, such as the Nagy István gallery and the Bunjevci house-museum. Opening days and hours vary throughout the year.
