About Holy Trinity Square (Szentháromság tér)

Szentháromság tér became Baja’s center in the first half of the 18th century, after the end of Ottoman rule, when the archbishop of Kalocsa built a palace there. Count Antal Grassalkovich completed the work, so the building is called Grassalkovich Palace. Today it houses the town hall; the neo-Renaissance façade dates from the 1896–1898 renovation.

In the middle of the square stands the Holy Trinity column, a Baroque monument erected in the 1750s in memory of the great plague epidemic. The statue originally stood in front of the palace and was moved to its current location at the end of the 18th century.

Three sides of the square are enclosed by buildings with light façades; the fourth, to the west, opens onto the Sugovica and Petőfi Island across the water. The stone paving forms a four-leaf clover pattern visible from any corner. Eötvös pedestrian street, the main shopping street of the center, departs from the square.

In July, the square and neighboring streets host thousands of cauldrons for the fish soup festival, created in 1996 to mark Baja’s 300th year as a town. The rest of the year the square concentrates concerts, fairs and city events.
