About Gemenc Forest Railway (Gemenci Erdei Vasút)

Gemenc is a floodplain forest on the banks of the Danube, between Baja and Szekszárd, part of Duna-Dráva National Park. With the river’s floods, large parts of the woods become flooded at certain times of year. The area is home to deer, wild boar, black storks and white-tailed eagles.

The narrow-gauge forest train is the best-known way to enter the woods. Regular trains depart from the Pörböly ecotourism center and run to Malomtelelő, a stretch of about 8 km, with stops at interpretive trails, bird hides and rest areas. On summer weekends, a steam train often runs as well.

The ecotourism center has two exhibitions: one about Gemenc’s treasures and life in the floodplain forest, and another about the Gemenc deer. Nearby are a beekeeping collection, a wildlife viewing point and the Nyéki-Holt-Duna trail, a former river branch covered in reeds.

Trains operate mainly in season and on weekends, and the Danube’s floods may suspend service and close parts of the forest. Confirm schedules before you go.
