How to get there
-
Palm Springs International Airport (PSP) Palm Springs · 35 km
Approximate distances. Check flights and bus, train or boat schedules before you travel.
The city is crossed by I-10, which connects it to Palm Springs and, about 210 km west, to Los Angeles. For flights, the nearest commercial airport is Palm Springs (PSP), about 35 km by road. Long-distance buses, including Amtrak Thruway connections, stop in the city. Confirm schedules before traveling.
How many days
One day lets you see the history museum, try a date shake and walk to a palm oasis in the valley preserve. With two days, you’ll have time to drive down to the Salton Sea.
When to go
The most pleasant months are October through April, with sunny days and desert nights that cool down. The county fair with the date festival takes place in winter, and music festivals happen in spring; during those weeks demand for lodging in the valley rises. Between June and September it gets extremely hot, and the history museum is closed in August.
The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.
Do you need a car?
Yes. Apart from the downtown museum, attractions are spread out: the palm preserve is about 25 km away and the Salton Sea about 48 km, and local buses do not reach them conveniently.
