About Church of the Ascension, Bogojina

The Church of the Ascension (Cerkev Gospodovega vnebohoda) stands on the hill above the village of Bogojina, in the hills between Murska Sobota and Goričko. The old medieval village church had become too small, and between 1925 and 1927 the architect Jože Plečnik, who designed much of Ljubljana, created a new church while keeping the old one as part of the complex.

From the outside the building is asymmetrical and hardly resembles a traditional church, except for the tower and the cross. Plečnik drew on the simple forms and pale walls of the local houses and barns.

The interior surprises with a wooden ceiling on which ceramic plates and jugs from Prekmurje are fixed. Many furniture and decorative details were designed by Plečnik himself. The church is considered one of the architect’s most important works outside Ljubljana.

From the churchyard you can see the village and the Mura plain.
